What exactly can overclocking a graphics card do apart from ruin it?

I 'v heard that overclocking graphics cards can shorten its life span. By how much will it do this? I have a new XFX 8800GT, and it runs Collin Macrae Dirt at around 30fps on medium settings. Will overclocking make it increase the fps at higher graphics settings?

Not much it will only give you about ten extra frames per second. I am guessing your processor is bottlenecking the video card. If not just lower the resolution and increase the detail hope this helps.
Reply:depending on what over-clocking software you use, it can fry your graphics card extremely quickly. It is not worth overclocking to get an extra 5 frames or so.

If overclocking does fry your graphics card, in many cases will void your warranty, so you will have to buy a whole new card.
