what are the advantages of graphics cards over onboard graphics

What are the advantages of graphics cards over onboard graphics?
onboard graphics will only take you so far with applications on your pc such as, for games you will need a graphics card for high graphics in you games, but for the average user on board graphics will run windows and its features
Reply:the advantages are:

better performance in high end games.

3D rendering in autocad etc.

if you dont do either than onboard will be fine. i e playing movies, web use etc.

graphics cards need more power too, and more space. dont get one unless you will use it. its the part of a PC that will see depreciation the most.

hope this helps.

Reply:hi there

the main advantage of graphics cards over onboard graphics is "memory usage"

normally onboard or intergrated graphics use some of you system memory to help run applications and games and there are several configurations of this

s.m.a or shared memory architecture is a set up where the graphics chip does not have its own dedicated memory, and instead shares the main system RAM with the CPU and other components

turbocache(nvidia patent) is a method of allowing graphics cards more available framebuffer memory by using both on-board video memory and main system memory. Main memory is accessed using the high-bandwidth PCI-Express bus.this is a technology solely used by nvidia

HyperMemory is ATI Technologies' method of using a PC's main system RAM as part of or all of the video card's framebuffer memory on their line of Radeon video cards and motherboard chipsets. It relies on new fast data transfer mechanisms within PCI Express.

basically the only advantage of a dedicated graphics card over onboard graphics is that your system memory is untouched and when you have onboard graphics it can be misleading when you have 1gb of memory but 128mb of it is borrowed by the onboard graphics, especially when you are trying to run a game that requires 1gb of memory to run correctly

then again the mian advantage of onboard graphics is they dont require a extra power source, however most of the latest graphic cards require a spare power lead(5v 4pin molex or 6pin pci-e connector)

hope this helps

good luck mate !
Reply:They generally have better specs for hardware accelerated 3D graphics, i.e. they can draw faster, and they have better shader support so they can render graphics effects that on-board chips can't. They also cost a lot more, take up a lot more space and require an extra power connector to drive all the extra electronics. If you use your computer for non-graphics related work then it's difficult to justify the extra cost.
Reply:There aren't any, at least none that apply to every graphics card. You can get graphics cards that are much more powerful (able to render faster, more detailed images) then anything you can find built into a motherboard but you can also get graphics cards that don't beat the cheapest onboard chipset.
