Does Sony Vegas Pro 8 need a great graphics card? Does it use a cards GPU to assist in rendering? Or will my 256mb Nvidia card suffice?

you don't need a graphic card at all. a 256mb VGA card will support every ting you need. if you want to make Sony Vegas rendering faster, you need change your CPU. video editing applications need a lot of CPU.
