In terms of graphics cards, what do these numbers mean?

I have a Nvidia GeForce 6100 and NVIDIA nForce 405 graphics card! I have no idea what this means? I just see words and numbers!! I'm thinking of getting a more powerful graphics card and have no idea what i'm looking for! How is the power of one described??? Someone help!!!!!!

In terms of graphics cards, what do these numbers mean?
the power is determined by the gpu type and series .. 6100 is rather old and weak .. 8800 is about the latest ..
Reply:the 6100 number of the card is just the model number, the 6 being the 6th generation. the nforce 405 is the GPU type, or the graphics processor. the higher the number, the more youre likeley to pay for it, but the better quality it is gonna be.

i dont like nVidia, i prefer ATI, though thats more confusing.
Reply:Higher numbers are not always better...

Card manufacturers sometimes use that trick to make you think you're buying the latest and greatest at a bargain.

Tip: Take an afternoon off and read www.tomshardware.com

He has a lot of information about graphics cards.

As the best card is also the most expensive, he will tell you which card to get for a specific budget.

Basically: Up to 70,- : Basic card. Good for games several years old and desktop work.

Around 150,- : Decent card, not too expensive. Will do games.

300-400 and up: Will play the latest games and performance is great. Must have a fast powerful PC to match!!!
Reply:Have a look at

its a great site for anything computer related.

P.s The higher the number, doesn't always mean a faster graphics card, beware.
Reply:higher numbers = higher power + newer model
