Graphics Cards- can I swap cards that came with the computer?

Does anyone know if I can swap graphics cards between computers? Specifically a Compaq Presario 5320US that has nVidia Vanta (integrated RAMDAC) with a Dell Dimension 2400 that has Intel 82845G Graphics Controller(internal DAC). Both these cards came with the computer when they were bought, so there is no cd with drivers. Do drivers get installed with the physical hardware itself when I attach the card? Can I just simply plug the cards out and swap them? What do I do about drivers if not? Thanks guys.

If both the cards are of the same format, eg PCI, or AGP, you can probably swap them with no issues. Windows XP should have drivers which will be automatically loaded upon detecting the card.





In the rare instance the drivers are not on Windows XP, you should go to the product manufacturer's site to download the latest drivers.





Be careful if the graphics is "embedded" or integrated into the MotherBoard; in that case, you have to bypass the MB graphics to utilize a card.
Reply:You remove the card and put the other one just like installing a new card. Install the drivers for it as long as that PC supports that card there is no problem

Reply:You could do that only if your computers' motherboards were compilable. Otherwise you will need to buy the card that is allowed by the mother board. Check with your PC manufacturers for the right card.

Reply:Isn't the Intel 82845G Graphics controller an integrated graphics solution? If so, you cannot remove this. It can be disabled and another card can be inserted. The Dimension 2400 lacked an agp port so you will be limited to pci (not pci-e). If your nVidia card is a pci card you can switch it to the Dell and WinXP should automatically load generic drivers to get it working. You will need to visit nVidia's website and look for the correct drivers though.





I have to wonder if the Vanta will be better than the integrated intel graphics, the only Vantas I could find on the web had 8mb of ram. If that is the case the intel solution will probably be better.
Reply:They both have the graphics chip incorporated into the motherboard. You can buy a graphics card and plug it in. The board has a 4X AGP slot. You can buy a MX440 AGP 8X 64M video card that is backwards compatible with a 4X AGP slot.


The present graphics can be disabled in the bios and once the new card is installed you install the driver software.
