Does laptop version of graphics cards vary in performance than desktop?

I am looking forward to a dell laptop that is equipped with a 256 mb nvidia 8600M gpu ?Will it perform as fine as the desktop version of 8600?If I am gonna face a performance drop, how much will it be ?

Does laptop version of graphics cards vary in performance than desktop?
Yes it does greatly if u have a built in card which is most common in the most of the laptops.
Reply:For the most part they will be the same. The difference comes in that a desktop could have higher clocked speed and be overclocked as where the notebook version is stuck with what it has. In fact the notebook card wont even beable to update the driver because the card is built for the model of the notebook.

But overall you can expect about the same. If your getting the 8600m your looking at twice the power if the 7600
Reply:Basically laptops are just smaller by design. But the technical qualities of the laptop version could be different, or could be the same. You need to find out what the M stands for. I can recall buying a geforce4mx before I found out that geforce4 were awesome and the mx version was COMPLETELY different and performed right next to much earlier versions.
