What are some good graphics cards on the market?

Not more than $400.Should be good for gaming(Windows) and can also run with ubuntu(edubuntu to be more specific, but i dont think it makes a difference)

What do u think of nvdia?

What are some good graphics cards on the market?
Edit:

By "compatibility with computer," he means things like your powersupply, what type of slot you have on your motherboard (pci, agp, pci-e), etc

Nvidia is the best for compatibility for both Windows and Linux. Anything made by Nvidia is Linux-Compatible

I'm thinking of buying this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

It has a pretty good clock rate (and it's easy to overclock) and 512mb of DDR3 ram

It should be able to handle modern games fine

I think in like febuary or march, Nvidia is releasing the geforce 9 series so you might want to wait a little.

It's about $120 and there's a $20 mail in rebate.

But if you're willing to spend a lot go with:

Which should handle any game out there on high settings with ease
Reply:this is far and away the best bang-for-the-buck card on the market today:

it will run anything you throw at it brilliantly, though it might struggle with crysis depending on the rest of your system. Other options are the newer spec 8800GTS and GTX series and possible the ati 3870 if you are running amd stuff.
Reply:Almost all the cards from NVidia are good. They work with Linux albeit after some work. Unlike ATI ones.
Reply:I am currently running Nvidia GT8600 and love the results. Prior to that, I was using the stock video card and it sucked. If your computer is compatible, try running Nvidia 8800. This is one of the best cards on the market for gaming and is extremely affordable.

Good luck with your gaming!

Edit: Inside your computer are slots that the card should plug into. On the box of the video card, it will tell you the type of slots the card requires to fit in your computer. The box will say something like "this card requires PCI slots" or "This card has PCI slots". Also it will list RAM and processor requirements to run the card. That is the compatibility I was speaking of. Hope this Helps.
Reply:Buy an overclocked version of the 512MB 8800GT. The GTS is a little faster but, according to the reviews, it isn't worth the extra cash. If you can add an extra $50 you may want to consider this card which is supposed to be 30% faster than the Ultra and is only gonna be $449. Supposed to be making its debut on Feb 14.

Reply:Nvidia's perfect.

400 dollars for a graphics card is plenty and i'd go for the 8800 Ultra SLi, get dual cards if you can cuz it'll be awesome and run everything you throw at it.
Reply:I am unable to advise you on this as I am not a gamer, however I would suggest you do use a Nvidia GeForce card, as there seems to be slight compatability issues ATI Radeon.
